This weekend I was invited to help out at a school near Cheras for Burmese schoolchildren whose parents are 'stateless' in Malaysia. This means they don't have any official, legal nationality and are somewhere between refugees and illegal aliens. The school was clean & impressively run and the kids were simply amazing - all 50 of them!
But don't be fooled by the external appearance of the kids and the school - it is run on a budget of only RM400 per month and they don't have enough money for food nor the electricity to run the fridge all week. They have seen their sponsors drop by 50% this year and exist only on the kindness of a few private individuals at the moment. Here at GA we would like to help out more and would encourage you to join us in our efforts. We will not pass on cash, but would prefer to help with 'gifts' such as the following items which the school needs desperately:
- school books (for teaching English language, ages 5-12)
- story books in English (ages 5-12)
- pens & pencils
- toys & games (ages 5-12)
- musical instruments (eg old guitars, recorders, triangles or percussive instruments)
Aside from the above, of course volunteers are welcomed as well to help out with teaching sessions at the school. I can't recommend this enough. If you or your company has any interest in supporting these efforts, please contact us at jaeberhard@ga-design.com.
